Rollover % — is the tape carrying forward?
Share of total open interest sitting in the next-month expiry vs the current. Elevated rollover means positions are being rolled forward — directional conviction carrying into the next series. Below-normal means positions are closing out instead of rolling — less conviction, possible squaring-off.

How rollover reads
- Elevated (> 75th %ile) — aggressive rollover. Institutional positions extending their view into next month. Historically a continuation signal when paired with positive price action during expiry week.
- Normal (25–75th %ile) — typical month-end hedging + re-establishment. No strong directional read on its own.
- Below normal (< 25th %ile) — positions closing instead of rolling. Often seen when a trend loses conviction or during risk-off phases. Watch for a possible range contraction the first week of the new series.
Rollover % is most informative in the final 3-5 sessions before monthly expiry. Mid-series rollover numbers are structurally skewed by weeklies + position unwinds unrelated to rollover intent.
Paired analysis
Rollover alone is a one-dimensional read. Combine with:
- F&O OI buildup scanner — stock-level classification (long buildup / short buildup / covering / unwinding)
- India VIX — options-implied volatility, proxy for positioning risk
- Bulk + block deals — spot-market institutional footprint
