How to trade around earnings
- IV crush is real. Options premiums typically drop 20–40% the morning after results regardless of direction. Long-straddle pre-results only works if the actual move exceeds the implied move.
- Read the guidance, not just the beat. Stock often moves on FY27 guidance, dividend, buyback, or margin commentary — not just reported EPS vs consensus.
- Sector sequencing. IT reports first (mid-April). Banks mid-to-late April. Consumer + pharma early May. Auto + infra around mid-May. A weak tone from the IT reporting sets the FPI appetite for the rest of the season.
Key Q4 FY26 themes to watch
- IT services — commentary on BFSI demand in Europe, AI revenue breakout as a reporting line, constant-currency growth guidance for FY27.
- Banks — NIM trajectory as RBI holds rates, slippage in unsecured retail, credit growth guidance.
- FMCG — rural recovery read, raw-material tailwinds from palm oil, volume vs value growth split.
- Auto — rural + EV mix, two-wheeler demand normalisation, dealer inventory.
